Tokyo-based Roland Kelts is a Japanese-American writer, editor, lecturer, and scholar.
Kelts is best known as the author of JAPANAMERICA: How Japanese Pop Culture has Invaded the US, considered the ultimate guide to Japanese pop culture.
He has written for many distinguished publications including The New Yorker, The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, The Guardian, The Times Literary Supplement, Time, The Japan Times, Nikkei Asia, and Guernica Magazine, among others. He is also a primary source on Japanese culture for CNN, the BBC, the CBC and NHK.
Kelts has interviewed Hayao Miyazaki, Haruki Murakami and Yoko Ono, and has spoken about Japan for think tanks, embassies, universities, pop culture conventions, and private events throughout America, Europe, and Asia. He has taught at The University of Tokyo, New York University, Columbia University, Sophia University, and Harvard University. He is currently a professor at Wadesa University in Tokyo.
Kelts has also won various awards and fellowships, including a 2017 Neiman Fellowship in Journalism from Harvard.
